The budget impasse is beginning to have a real effect on the residents of Southern Illinois. This morning, it was announced that due to the lack of a state budget, Delta Center, Inc., which provides rehabilitation and treatment services for people with mental and substance abuse disorders, shut its doors. This closure will cost Cairo and Alexander county viable jobs and an outlet for people struggling with substance abuse issues.
The economic impact of this facility’s closure adds to the growing unemployment rate in Alexander County. Alexander County has the highest unemployment rate in Southern Illinois at 8.2 percent, which has grown from last month.
