Senator Forby donates $10K to Pat’ Kids charity

BENTON, IL – Illinois State Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) is working again this year to ensure Southern Illinois children get a visit from Santa and have a present to open this Christmas. For the past three years, Forby has worked together with Pat’s Kids, through the Poshard Foundation, to raise funds in support of that goal.

“It’s important to make sure that all kids in our area have presents under their tree during the holidays,” Senator Forby said. “I am proud of the work that Pat’s Kids has done for our area over the years and I believe Southern Illinois is a better place because of it. I hope that the people in our district will realize the impact Pat’s Kids has on children’s lives.”

Forby has donated $10,000 every year to Pat’s Kids from funds raised at his annual bocce ball tournament for the past three years, totaling more than $30,000 during that time span. Forby in the past has also donated a Stan Musial jersey and an autographed Michael Jordan jersey to bring in additional donations for the organization.

Pat’s Kids is a non-profit organization started about a decade ago by local radio personality Pat Benton and Glenn Poshard, founder of the Poshard Foundation, to ensure that sexually and physically abused children have a present to open at Christmas time. The charity is completely volunteer-driven and every penny of every donation goes directly to purchasing gifts for these children.

Forby acts to keep facilities in Chester, Murphysboro open

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois State Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) today acted to keep seven state facilities operating throughout the fiscal year, saving nearly 2,000 jobs, by passing Senate Bill 2412. The legislation shifts state funds to address several lingering issues in the budget that passed last spring – including the potential closure of seven state facilities.

“This is a great example of what can happen when the people of our district come together to fight for things important to Southern Illinois,” Senator Forby said. “These facilities are vital to our region and I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues to keep these facilities open.”

Governor Quinn announced months ago that seven state facilities, including the Chester Mental Health Center and the Illinois Youth Center in Murphysboro, would be forced to close their doors and thousands of jobs would be cut due to shortcomings in the budget. The legislation allows for a cost-neutral shift of state funds to restore funding for the facilities as well as several important health and human services programs.
