Less than a year and a half ago, my colleagues and I passed a $31 billion statewide capital construction plan, called “Illinois Jobs Now!,” for the first time in over a decade. The plan has already created thousands of jobs and will put even more hard-working people back to work right here in Illinois. Not only is this a job-creating plan, but it fixes our state’s aging infrastructure by repairing our roads, bridges and highways and improving our local schools and hospitals.

During my time as your state senator, I have always fought to protect your right to bear arms. This year won’t be any different. I have re-introduced legislation that would allow a citizen who is 18 years or older to apply for and obtain a Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) card without the consent of a parent or legal guardian. This is a matter of fairness for the people of Illinois. Right now, only those who are 21 years or older can apply for and obtain a FOID card without their parents’ consent. This is unfair to the young men or women who are allowed to enter the military at the age of 18.

Over the past few weeks, I have been stressing the importance for lawmakers to work together to find a responsible budget solution that both sides can agree on. With the new legislative session beginning, I think it’s vital to show the people of Southern Illinois that good things can happen by working together. This week I wrote a letter-to-the-editor (below) showing some proposals that are intended to benefit the entire region, not just one specific area or district. This past week, the Senate closed the books on the 96th General Assembly (GA) and the new members of the 97th GA were sworn in. During what have been some of the most challenging times here in Southern Illinois and throughout our state, I am proud of the accomplishments of the previous General Assembly. These initiatives will help our state get out of these tough economic times and continue to move Illinois forward.
